David Martin, the second speaker at SFU MUN 2010’s Opening Ceremony, claims that there is an elusive factor needed so populations will back down from conflict. Crisis and challenges to national security quickly prompt people to action. Nuclear war, pandemic disease and profound climate change are necessary to shake the public out of their apathy. Martin declares that a shift in consciousness is needed immediately. The public should not postpone action until such critical and dangerous times. With the boom of internet and the information age, citizens today are more aware of their interconnectedness and the need to act as one. Martin ends his speech by prescribing the delegates with “an attitude of hope”. He ends with a challenge - “How can you inspire those around you to embrace change? We’re relying on you!”
