Encouraging words resonated at the Opening Ceremony of SFUMUN 2011. The theme of courage in approaching and solving the problems of an increasingly complex world was strong in several speeches given during the opening ceremony of SFUMUN2011.

In a motivating speech, the key note speaker Dr. Jon J. Scott, a specialist of ethics in international relations and intelligence seasoned diplomat, having served in various roles in Canadian diplomacy, provided a multitude of examples exemplifying the courage of real life people in real life crises. He set out a framework for dealing with crises and then showed how each of these individuals may not have been diplomats per se, but possessed one of the most important attributes of a diplomat. Other attributes listed include a listening ear, a “quick mind” and a sensitivity to foreign languages.

The final words were given by Aske Bonde, the Secretary General of SFUMUN 2011 in an energetic, speech that likened the United Nations to the community center of the world where all voices are heard. Bonde admonished delegates to heed their responsibility to act in the interest of humanity.

Expectations remain high in the hopes of quickly resolving the problems of the world.
