Clear tension between Egypt and The United States.
During a lengthy moderated debate in the security Council concerning weather or not a representative from Hamas would be allowed to speak to the council, a rift between the United States and Egypt became aparant. The delegate from the United States referred to Hamas as “violent thugs, crooks, and criminals” in a particularly volatile speech. The delegate refered to members of the council who endorsed the idea (Egypt being one of the most supportive), as nations who “openly endorse terrorism”, before walking out while Hamas was allowed to speak. Upon reentry the United States made multiple motions to expel Hamas from the council which were repeatedly voted down.
These events have made apparent a new and clear tension between the United States and the new government of Egypt, with both delegates exchanging direct and heated remarks toward one another’s contradicting stance on Hamas. In The context of the uncertain future of Egyptian foreign policy in the Middle East, the clear difference of opinion and increased hostility between the two allies is perhaps the sign of an approaching mutual loss of confidence between the two allis.
