Egypt Refuses to leave Gaza Strip unless a Referendum for Palestinians occurs

Alina Anghel

Yesterday, the Security Council passed a motion to have Egypt enter the Gaza Strip to secure the region against the threat of smallpox. Egypt has now stated that it will not leave the Gaza Strip until Palestine achieves it's own independent state. India does not agree with Egypt's presence anymore, though they passed the motion yesterday. Israel does not believe that Egypt's presence is against it's sovereignty since they are allegedly there just to be 'hunting down terrorists' and is helping towards the peace process.

Egypt has proposed a referendum to give Palestinians a voice and does not see themselves as an occupying power. Mexico and Russia support this. The United Kingdom says it's 'hard to have a referendum when you have the guns'. Israel is thinking on it's stance, it wants a two state solution but in it's own way. India seems to be representing Israel's interests and is very skeptical of the proposal.

Discussion is continuing to clarify the situation.
