In the debate on the NDM-1 superbug in light of the cholera outbreak in New Delhi India, the various delegates and delegations continually brought up the theme of cleanliness. Medical tourism has been blamed for the spread of the NDM-1 super bug. Uganda calls for medical tourism regulation while remaining skeptical of the effectiveness of the WHO. All delegates agree of the importance of containment; however Germany reminds us that people are dying so the focus should be on the logistics of controlling the situation at hand.
After Russia completely directs its discussions towards India regarding sanitation, the representative for India responded in a strong rebuttal that “now is not the time for pointing fingers.” Russia maintains that its goal was not to target India, but just wishes to help. The debate continues, but India expresses concerns that Russia is explicitly targeting because of continued calls of “India’s cooperation. The issue of preventing the spread was repeatedly brought up regarding management of potential outbreaks, however no concreted plans have been adopted.
Solutions introduced by various countries include education, containment and hospital sanitization. Brazil’s representative feels that immediately the goal should be education, as with the uncertainty regarding focus on searching for a cure may be “a waste of money”.
It remains to be seen where how the countries will vote on this pressing health issue that threatens to take a global proportion without concerted actions from the international community.
