Leaked note from the Security Council

Elizabeth Cumberbatch, BBC News

A personal note from the delegate for the United Kingdom to the Georgian delegate in the Security Council has fallen into the hands of the BBC.

The note, transcribed below, is the continuation of a conversation between Georgia and the UK regarding humanitarian aid.

The United Kingdom delegate felt it was inappropriate to provide humanitarian aid to areas such as the Gaza strip, and others under the control of bodies the UK does not approve of. Georgia then suggested that the goal of humanitarian aid was to “provide aid for those in need, including those under oppressive regimes.”

The UK delegate then responded in written form:

“Like those Russian soldiers you captured? The Empire will not be dictated to by the backwater Soviet republic reliant on British/French/American protection to avoid becoming another Russian province.”

The Georgian delegate has stated he is “disturbed by the UK’s disregard for international diplomacy” and offered no response to the delegate.
