WTO Seems Hesitant About MNC Regulation
Today the general consensus in the WTO is to lower trade barriers and increase international trade, while creating more equal trade agreements.
In opening speeches at the WTO meeting on multinational corporate regulation, several major exporters including India and Brazil stressed the importance of free trade and foreign investment in driving their economies.
The delegate from India spoke in her opening statement of “encouraging regulations”, “without raising taxes and tariffs”.
It was made clear by several delegates including Mexico, Japan, and The United States that easing the the recession is a major concern, and thus may factor into any decision regarding multinational corporate regulations.
As the UN meets in the midst of numerous national recessions, increased support for private financial institutions and corporations as the drivers of economic recovery seems to be on the minds of many delegates. In this context, it remains to be seen if any resolution on debt forgiveness to heavily indebted countries can be passed in the General Assembly.
